Customs and Celebrations

Customs and Celebrations
If we create a dichotomy between that which exists in nature on one hand and that which is made by humans on the other, we could say that all that all that is human made is design. Is this a rigid dichotomy or is it more nebulous? How do the two spheres inform one another? In Community designs surrounding customs and celebrations are considered as material culture revealing an intersection of design and the natural world. What do I mean by this? As the earth revolves on its axis and day becomes night, and as the Earth revolves around the sun and the seasons cycle from winter to spring to summer to fall, we experience, acknowledge, and celebrate both moments in time and the passage of time. From birthday cakes to engagement rings, from Halloween costumes to fireworks, from Judaica to Christmas trees, there are designs that punctuate the time. Like Children’s Space, designs discussed in Community are interlaced in relationships. What do these designs reveal about the specific community and the human experience?
