Childhood

 Childhood

The first relationship each of us has with design is as children.  For this reason, Childhood  is the first subsection in Living. Of particular interest are designs that integrate into our early life, through either thoughtfully solving challenges particular to childhood or designs that inspire joy, creativity, growth, and questions.  Lots and lots of questions.  I maintain that all good children’s design, in one way or another, fosters healthy relationships, dignity, and growth. What is the intention of children’s design? How is the design actually used? Is the design temporal, or can it grow with the child? Is it made to be an heirloom? Has the designer or design team considered the materials thoughtfully? Does our earliest experience with designs impact our experience with designs later in life? Childhood explores these questions through Toys and Childhood Designs: Affordances.
