“A coherent representational universe,…[also know as this] fiction of [laying a homogeneity upon a heterogeneity] is a result of [the] uncritical belief…that ordering and classifying can produce representational understanding of the world.”
–Douglas Crimp, On the Museum’s Ruins
What is the difference between a design that is collected and one that is not? Why do we collect? How should objects be collected, curated and organized?
Design objects have lives. When selected for a collection, a distinct value is placed upon that design: the value of being desired. What designs are desired? By whom? Why? How do private collectors and collections impact this dialogue? How do public museums with permanent collections factor into this discourse? What is the impact of collecting and collections on the cradle to cradle of designs? Collections and Collections will explore private and public collections and their impact on the human experience.
