To Have and To Hold

“The artist is a collector of things imaginary or real. He accumulates things with the same enthusiasm that a little boy stuffs his pockets. The scrap heap and the museum are embraced with equal curiosity. He takes snapshots, makes notes and records impressions on tablecloths or newspapers, on backs of envelopes or matchbooks. Why one thing and not another is part of the mystery, but he is omnivorous.”
Paul Rand, Paul Rand: A Designer’s Art

To Have and To Hold  explores cherished designs. How and why are designs created? When are designs successful? Why are some designs venerated? Why are we drawn to certain designs and not others? Why are some chairs, like Marcel Breuer’s Wassily Chair, found in institutions and homes alike? Why is some jewelry collected by public museums, while other jewelry is not? To Have and To Hold explores the naissance of designs and collections of design under two distinct spheres.  The first is Technology and Craft. The second is Collections and Collecting.
